The cloisonn were made in ancient China, and are still made the same way they have been for centuries. The time-honored process originated in Beijing in the 12th century. Tiny copper filigree partitions are created, and through a process of soldering and heating, put on a metal urn. The enamel glaze is hand painted into each partition and kiln fired, a process repeated several times until the surface is smooth. Each is then ground, polished, and finally electroplated creating an elegant finish.
