Historical Uses: dry skin, damaged skin, anti-aging, skin sagging, wrinkles, irritated skin, inflammation, dry hair, damaged hair, frizzy hair Mystical Attributes: The Sacred Lotus has many meanings across cultures and religions. The lotus flower’s rise above the mud of its roots represents the spread of spiritual enlightenment. In Buddhism, the lotus symbolizes Buddha’s ability to rise above the world’s negative aspects and achieve enlightenment, similar to how the flower emerges from the mud but remains untouched by it. The lotus flower can symbolize rebirth, overcoming adversity, the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. In ancient Egypt, the lotus represented rebirth. It symbolizes rising from a dark place into beauty. The lotus flower can symbolize purity, grace, and purity of mind. In Hinduism, the white lotus symbolizes the purity of body, mind, and spirit. In China, the lotus is a symbol of longevity because its seeds remain viable for many years. The oldest recorded lotus germination was from seeds that were 1,300 years old and found in a dry lakebed in northeastern China. Mystical Intentions: awareness, enlightenment, spirituality, spiritual awakening, rebirth, adversity, resilience, purity, longevity, youth, beauty, bliss, peace, tranquility, centering, meditation, contentment, happiness, mindfulness Smell: A warm, green, floral aroma with sweet, earthy, and tropical undertones Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: The Lotus is a water-growing plant where it floats on the surface as its roots drive deep into the earth. The plant flowers during the day and closes up at night. Lotus grows in a wide variety of climates, from South America to Russia, and everywhere in between. In North America, it ranges from Southern California to Canada. In Australia, it grows from the tropics to the snowy mountains. Lotus are perennial plants that shoot in spring, then flower during summer and autumn (from June to September) before going dormant in winter. The plants sizes range from miniature (that can happily grown in a 6-inch bowl) up to 6 feet (growing in dams and lakes). The flowers are typically between 2.5-6 inches wide, opening in the morning and lasting 3-5 days before they die back and slowly sink. To ensure many blooms, cut the dying flowers as they sink. Follow the stem down as far as it goes and cut it. Clean off dead or dying leaves in the same manner. Lotus can be grown in a wide variety of ways from free standing bowls on the patio, to a backyard pond, or a large lake. When you purchase a plant, re-pot in a larger bowl or pot wider than 16 inches (40cm) with a depth of 8 inches (20cm) for small varieties, or 32 inches (80cm) wide with a depth of 12 inches (30cm) for larger varieties. The container should be wide rather than deep because the rhizomes creep across the surface of the soil. Use plastic containers specifically designed for aquatic plants. Line the pots with burlap or landscape fabric so the soil does not fall through the cracks. Carefully take the plant out of the nursery pot, without disturbing the roots. Place in the middle of the new wide pot or bowl. Carefully add regular topsoil free of herbicides and pesticides (do not use potting soil) around the plant and fill the container 1/3 with the soil. Then add 3cm of pea gravel over the soil and fill the pot with water (normal tap water is fine to use) without submerging the leaves, to about 2 inches (5cm) over the soil. Place in a location where the plant will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. The plants require at least 6 hours of sun to flower. Be sure to protect the plant from frost. Keep away from flowing water or fountains. And do not allow the pot or bowl to freeze solid. Fertilize with special lotus satchels once a year in the spring/summer. Do not fertilize while dormant in the winter. To fertilize, push the satchel into the edge of the bowl or pot until it reaches the bottom of the soil. Use 1 satchel for a bowl or pot between 16-24 inches (40-60cm) wide. Use 2 satchels for a bowl or pot over 32 inches (80cm) wide. To grow Lotus in a pond, follow the directions above to re-plant in a large bowl or pot. Then place the Lotus in a sunny spot in the pond where it will receive at least 6 hours of sun per day. The water level should cover the top of the pot, but again, do not submerge the leaves. Keep the Lotus away from flowing water features or fountains. Follow the directions above to fertilize. The Lotus grows most successfully in a lake. If it has room to grow and expand, they will flower for a long period of time. Cut a 6 inch (150mm) piece out of the side of a nursery pot (NOT THE BOTTOM). Then place in a sunny location in 12-20 inches (30-50cm) of still water near the edge of the lake. Push some mud from the lake against the side of the pot where the section has been removed. CAREFULLY, take the Lotus out of the nursery pot, trying not to disturb the roots. Push mud from the lake around the plant. If you have water birds or crayfish, place protective chicken wire around the plant for the first 3-4 weeks. Once your Lotus begins to grow, the plant will follow the receding water line in your lake. Fertilize with special lotus satchels once a year in the spring/summer. Do not fertilize while dormant in the winter. NOTE: When growing tropical water lilies, they require a full day of full sun. Frost can kill them. Water Lilies can be stored over winter by lifting the plant from the container and storing the rhizome in a plastic bag or container full of damp sand and peat moss at 50-55 degrees. Remember to label the bags. Or you can re-pot the Lily into a smaller container. Trim the roots and cut back the majority of the foliage. Store it in an aquarium tank, making sure that the temperature does not rise above 68 degrees to ensure the plant is not actively growing.
