The Zuni people apply a poultice of the powdered root to sores, rashes and skin infections, and use infusion of the root for athlete’s foot. In Western herbalism, the root is often used for treating anemia, due to its high level of iron. Both the leaves and root may be a mild laxative for some people, though not in all. This is due to the presence of anthroquinone glycosides, and is not an action that should be relied upon, but seen as a possible effect of the plant when taken. It is a naturalized species throughout the temperate world. In many areas it has become a serious invasive species, including throughout North America, southern South America, New Zealand and parts of Australia. It is a perennial flower of the Polygonaceae family. The mature Yellow Dock plant takes on a reddish brown color and it will produce a stalk that grows to a height of about 1 meter (2 – 3 feet tall, but may grow as high as 5 feet). The plant’s smooth leaves shoot off from a large basal rose shape, and have distinctive waved or even curled edges. The bottom leaves grow to 6 – 12 inches long. On the stalk, flowers and seeds are produced in clusters on branched stems. The plant’s largest flower and seed cluster forms at the highest peak. Small green flowers emerge clustered on spikes and change to brown later in the season. Yellow Dock has shiny, brown seeds encased in the calyx of the flower. It is this casing that helps the seeds to spread to new locations since it enables the seeds to float on water and also to get caught in wool and animal fur. Yellow Dock produces a large, yellow, carrot-shaped, forking taproot. The roots have a radish-like taste and odor. The Yellow Dock plant is a weedy herb that will grow in a wide variety of habitats. It is readily found in areas where the soil has been disturbed such as roadsides, fields/meadows, waste areas, shorelines, pastures, home lawns, and forest edges in full to part sun. It grows all over the United States and Canada, except for desert areas. The plants are seen in winter and early spring. The plants are first seen in winter and early spring as a rosette or a few basal leaves poking out of the ground. Yellow Dock prefers rich, moist and heavy soils. It grows easily by seed and can be sown directly in garden soil. The root is harvested in early spring and dried for later use. Store dried Yellow Dock root cut pieces and dried Yellow Dock root powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
