Betel Essential Oil (Piper Betle) 1 Dram, Undiluted HERB COMMON NAME : Betel HERB SCIENTIFIC NAME : Piper Betle FAMILY : Piperaceae Parts Used: Leaf Description: Betel is a vine of the family Piperaceae, which includes pepper and kava. The betel plant is native to Southeast Asia. It is an evergreen, dioecious perennial, with glossy heart-shaped leaves and white catkin. Betel plants are cutlivated for their leaves. Essential oil present in betel leaves possess anti-bacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria namely, Escherichia coli (E-coli), Staphylococcus aures (Staph), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, the presence of phenolics and phytochemicals in betel leaves help to protect against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Studies have found that betel leaf extracts and oils have a very strong effect on wound and burn healing. Historical Uses: anti-bacterial, burns, wound healing Mystical Attributes: The betel nut is an offering in Hinduism. Betel leaves signify freshness and prosperity. According to Hindu scriptures, this leaf was obtained by the gods during the churning of ocean for the elixir. Thus the leaf is used in every puja ritual. It is believed that many deities reside in this leaf and it purifies water. In Vietnam the betel leaf and areca nuts are given to the bride’s family at weddings. The Vietnamese phrase “matters of betel and areca” means marriage. Mystical Intentions: prosperity, purification, marriage Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Piper betel is originally native to Southeast Asia, cultivated mostly in South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to Papua New Guinea. It needs a compatible tree or a long pole for support. Betel requires well-drained fertile soil. Waterlogged, saline and alkali soils are unsuitable for its cultivation. The harvested leaves are consumed locally and exported to other parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Betel is grown and cultivated as an important crop in rural Bangladesh.
