The oil is most commonly used on the skin as a mosquito and other flying insect repellent. The oil is also often used to make insect-repelling candles. Spraying the oil, 2 Tbsp mixed with 1 cup of water or rubbing alcohol, is said to be an effective repellent of mice and rats. Citronella Essential Oil is also used to prevent the growth or spread of harmful bacteria. It is commonly used for its antimicrobial, cleansing, disinfecting, freshening, and deodorizing properties. Citronella oil has also been used topically to eliminate head and body lice. Belonging to the same family, Citronella is often confused with Lemongrass as they look and grow very much the same. The easiest way to tell them apart is that Lemongrass has off-white pseudo stems while those of Citronella are reddish. The essential oil is made by steam distillation, where steam is passed through the grass to pull out the oil. Contraindications & Toxicity: For some people, may cause skin reactions or irritation. Unsafe if inhaled. Lung damage has been reported. Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, ears, or other sensitive areas.
