Echinacea has been used for years in alternative medicine to support the immune system, and to purify the blood, especially during the cold and flu season. Research shows that it is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and contains properties that help to build new white blood cells. It fights all kinds of germs and improves your body’s natural immunity. Echinacea is so effective, that it is one of the most studied and researched herbs you can find on the market today. Many people use it when they feel any type of illness coming on in order to improve their ability to fight it. Unlike antibiotics, which directly kills bacteria, Echinacea makes our own immune cells more efficient in attacking bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells, including cancer cells. Echinacea is considered to be a very effective detox for the urinary tract, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems. The roots and the whole plant are considered particularly beneficial in the external treatment of psoriasis, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, sores, wounds, and burns, possessing cortisone-like and antibacterial activity as well as showing skin regenerating properties. It can be a treatment for abscesses, chronic fatigue syndrome, urinary tract infection, and sore throat.  Echinacea is also used for preventing aging. It was once used Native Americans as an antidote to treat snakebites and other venomous bites. Echinacea also contains chemicals that are highly insecticidal particularly to mosquitoes and house flies. It was believed in old English herbals to cure syphilis and rabies. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Echinacea is native to eastern North America and present to some extent in the wild in much of the eastern, southeastern and Midwest United States. It attracts butterflies to the garden, but slugs also seem to love it. Echinacea is a perennial of the Asteraceae family with smooth, 2-5 ft. stems and long-lasting, lavender flowers. Echinacea flowers bloom from July to October. Flowers occur singly atop the stems and have domed, purplish-brown, spiny centers and drooping, lavender rays. The plant takes two years to flower when grown from seed, but can flower the first year if you have a particularly long growing season or plant early indoors. The flower heads can reach 4 to 5 inches in diameter. It has rough, scattered leaves that become small toward the top of the stem. The leaves are also bristly, dark green, lanceolate, alternate, and long petioled at the base, more sessile near the top of the stem. The roots are tapering, cylindrical, slightly spiral, and fibrous with an aromatic smell. It most often grows in cultivated gardens, prairies, meadows in full sun, in rocky to sandy-clay soils, either dry or moist soil, and it can tolerate drought once established. Echinacea is easy to grow from seed. Sow seeds in March or April in a greenhouse and only just cover the seed with soil. The seed usually germinates in 10-21 days at 25°C. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots once they are large enough to handle, and grow them in the greenhouse for the first summer. Plant them out in the late spring or early summer of the following year and give them some protection from slugs at least until they are established. Divisions can be taken in the spring or autumn. The top growth should be harvested just before the flower buds open by cutting the stems just above the first or second pair of full green leaves. If there are seed heads on the plants, distribute them on the ground if you want additional plants the next year. Roots should be harvested in the fall when the top growth has been killed by hard frost. Harvest roots only from well-established plants. Removing root growth from plants younger than 3-4 years may result in killing the plant. To harvest Echinacea roots, lift the plant and tip it back using a garden fork. Use a very sharp knife and clean-cut the portions of root that you want to harvest. Be sure to leave enough roots to sustain the plant. A good rule of thumb is to harvest about 20% of root if you intend to make annual harvests. Dry the roots (cut into small pieces), flowers and leaves. Store dried root pieces, dried flower and leaves in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Contraindications: Theoretically with autoimmune disease. Allergic reaction to Asteraceae family. Toxicity: High doses may cause nausea and/or mouth & throat irritation.
