But it has been used as an alternative medicine for centuries on just about every continent in the world, and for just about every ailment known to man. All parts of Heal All are edible. Heal-All is used in teas for fevers, chest conditions including tuberculosis, diarrhea, internal bleeding, heart disease, cancer, liver and kidney disease, herpes, HIV / AIDS, diabetes, and many other conditions. Heal All has been shown to help fight cancer by inducing the death of cancer cells and preventing tumor growth. One study of human liver cancer cells found that it stopped the spread of cancer by inhibiting certain enzymes that promote cancer growth. And in fact, a study of 424 people with breast cancer found that those who took the herb along with anti-cancer medication lived significantly longer than those who took the medication alone, and twice as many people in the group who took Heal All with their medication showed no evidence of the disease after treatment compared to the group that did not. The herbal tonics are also used as a gargle for sore mouth, sore throat, throat infections, and laryngitis. A type of carb in the herb has been shown to block the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) cells, which helps prevent it from spreading. Topical creams made with Heal All may significantly reduce the number of sores and skin lesions caused by the virus. Clinical analysis also shows it to have an antibacterial action, and it is commonly used in folk medicine to prepare topical infusions, balms and salves for healing wounds and skin diseases, and to stanch the blood of small cuts. A weak infusion of the plant has been used as an eye wash for sties and pinkeye. Mystical Intentions: home purification, hunting magic, general protection, health and healing, smudge, scrying, visions Taste & Smell: The tea is somewhat bitter and can be improved by adding honey to taste. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Heal All is a perennial herb found throughout Europe, Asia and North America, as well as most temperate climates. It makes a good groundcover and has been grown as part of green roofs. It will flower when very short if it is mowed. Butterflies and bees enjoy its nectar, and rabbits like the leaves. Heal All grows up to about 1 foot tall, with creeping, self-rooting, tough, square, reddish stems branching at the leaf axis. Once the plant reaches any significant height, it falls over and attaches new roots to the ground if possible, much like skullcap and other herbs in the mint family. It looks best grown in bunches. The leaves are lance-shaped, serrated, and reddish at tip, about 1-2 inches long and 1/2 – 1 inch wide, and growing in opposite pairs down the square stem. Each leaf has 3-7 veins that shoot off of the middle vein to the margin. The stalks of the leaves are generally short, but can be up to 5 cm (2 inches) long. The flowers grow from a club-like, somewhat square, whirled cluster; immediately below this club is a pair of stalkless leaves standing out on either side like a collar. Flowers are two lipped and tubular. The top lip is a violet blue, and the bottom lip is often white. It has three lobes with the middle lobe being larger and fringed upwardly. The flowers bloom at different times depending on climate and other conditions, but mostly in summer (typically from June to August, but up to as late as October in the USA). Heal All is often found growing in moist areas, waste ground, grassland, woodland edges in full sun or light shade. It will grow thicker in part shade. It usually grows in basic and neutral damp soils. Heal All will germinate at room temperature without any cold stratification, but it helps to cold stratify the seeds for a month. Try fluctuating the temperatures as warm in the day and cool at night. Sow seed in mid-spring in a cold frame. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. If you have sufficient seed, then it can be sown outdoors directly into the garden in mid to late spring. You can propagate by division in spring or autumn. It is a short-lived perennial so may only last a few years, but can live as long as 10 years. Heal All can be used fresh or dried. Gather flowering tops, and dry in small bunches for later use. For drying, it is best harvested in mid-summer. Harvest the leaves when the flowers are just budding. Dry the leaves, stems and flowers and cut into smaller pieces. Store dried & cut plant parts in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place. Seeds live at least 5 years when stored cool and dry.
