Pleurisy Root is traditionally decocted to produce tinctures, teas, infusions, tonics, and extracts, sometimes in combination with other herbs. The root has historically been used for respiratory problems, hence its name. Native to North America, Pleurisy Root has been used for thousands of years by Native Americans for various health conditions. Some still use it in the Americas for respiratory problems, but is not as widely used in other parts of the world. Pleurisy Root has been used to ease pleurisy itself. It has been shown to reduce chest pain and inflammation of the lung tissues when suffering from pleurisy. It is believed to help thin the mucus so that when coughing, it helps to move fluid out of the lungs. Often, when people suffer from pleurisy or another type of respiratory infection, they feel a painful tightness. Pleurisy Root has been proven to loosen the tightness felt, bring relief, and ease breathing. In herbalism, for respiratory infections, Pleurisy Root is often combined with the herb Skullcap. Pleurisy Root has also been used for problems in the digestive system, like diarrhea. It can help to promote a healthy bowel system that is more regular. Pleurisy Root has been used as a companion treatment for dysentery. Pleurisy Root has been shown to bring relief from fever by promoting sweating and help the body return to a more normal temperature. Pleurisy contains a natural cardiac glycoside called asclepin, which has been documented to have a wider margin of safety than digoxin in animal and in vitro studies. Digoxin is cardiac glycoside medicine used to control some heart problems, such as irregular heartbeats (arrythmias) including atrial fibrillation. It has been used to help manage symptoms of heart failure, usually with other medicines. An herbal poultice of the roots has been used to help swellings, bruises, wounds, and skin ulcers. Some Native American legends tell of the roots being used as a body wash for lifting and running strength. When harvested before the seed floss forms, seed pods are edible if cooked when young. Cooked bloomed flowers are edible and said to taste like sweet peas. Leaves and new buds are edible when cooked like spinach. The above ground parts of Butterfly Weed are used mainly for food and clothing. The bark is used to make a quality fiber and woven into twine or cloth. The seed floss is used for stuffing in pillows and life jackets, candle wicks, and fibers to make cloth. Research indicates the floss is effective at cleaning up oil spills at sea. Pleurisy root has been used in purging ceremonies to cause vomiting and in chant lotion. Mystical Intentions:  health and healing, purging Taste & Smell:  Pleurisy Root has very little odor, and has a very bitter, unpleasant, almost acidic woody taste. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Pleurisy (Asclepias Tuberosa) is a species of milkweed distributed throughout the woodlands of eastern North America. Although it grows from southern Ontario and New York, to Minnesota, south to Florida and Colorado. Because the plant’s fragrant and colorful flower clusters serve as food for various species of butterfly larvae, the herb is commonly called butterfly weed. The plant is a perennial herb and reaches modest heights of 0.3 – 1 meter (1 ft – 3 ft, 3 in) tall. The leaves are spirally arranged and lanceolate. They are usually approximately 5–12 cm long and 2–3 cm broad. The leaves grow closely all the way up the stem and are hairy, unserrated, are lance-shaped, alternate, sessile, are dark green on top, and lighter beneath. Stems are branched near the top and have corymbs or umbel (clusters) of many reddish-orange, dark orange, or deep yellow flowers. The flowers bloom from early summer through early fall, usually from June to September. Unlike other milkweeds, Pleurisy contains little or no milky juice. Pleurisy requires full sun. The plant grows on the sides of roads, in dry open fields, or in dry, sandy, gravelly or grassy places. It prefers dry, humus rich or peaty, well-drained sand or gravel soil or the soil on the edges of stream. Pleurisy is easy to grow. Plants should be pot-grown from seed and planted out in their permanent locations when young. Pleurisy does not grow well from division. In the fall, after blooming, flowers are followed by seed pods from 4 to 5 inches long, containing the seeds with their long silky hairs, or floss. Pleurisy Root is spindle-shaped, large, branching, white, and fleshy with a knotted crown. The root is harvested in the autumn and can be used fresh or dried. Store dried pleurisy root pieces in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Even low amounts of extracts have been documented to cause uterine contractions (in vivo) and exhibit estrogenic effects. May create mild sedation. Has been documented to cause dermatitis (milky latex is reported to be irritant). Excessive amounts may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Do not use with heart problems or cardiac stimulant medications. Flavonoids found in Pleurisy are cardioactive steroids (cardiac glycosides) which inhibit the sodium potassium pump leading to a rise in intracellular calcium, which increases contractile force and speed of the heart muscle. May interact with medicines administered concurrently with similar or opposing effects (e.g. Digitalis).   Constituents:  Flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin) Cardiac Glycosides: Cardenolide type (afroside, asclepin, asclepiadin, calactin, calotropin, gomphoside, syriogenin, syrioside, uscharidin, uscharin and uzarigenin) Amino acids (choline) Phenolic acids (caffeic & chlorogenic acid) Carbohydrates (glucose, fructose and sucrose) Triterpenes (a-amyrin and bamyrin, lupeol, friedelin, viburnitol) Volatile oil Resin     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
