It is noted for its nice, light minty fragrance. It is a relative of mint, and makes a nice substitute for mint in the garden. Native Americans perfumed themselves and their clothing with it, perfumed their horses with the leaves, and maidens stuffed their pillows with it from puberty until marriage. Bee Balm is used as an incense herb, and has been used for its scent on hot rocks and hot coals, sometimes combined with pine needles. It is an edible herb that has been traditionally used as a medicinal plant. The leaves, flowers, and stems have been used by herbalists as an antiseptic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic and stimulant. Some drink herbal infusions for colds, catarrh (sinus inflammation), headache, gastric disorders, indigestion, bloating, to fight fever, soothe sore throat, relieve flatulence (gas), to help with nausea, for menstrual pain, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Bee Balm was also once used by Native Americans to induce sweat for ceremonial sweat lodges. Steam inhalation of Bee Balm has been used to help ease sore throat and for mucus membrane inflammation, to cause increased flow of mucus. Externally, Bee Balm is sometimes applied by herbalists for skin eruptions and infections, bee stings, rashes, and minor wounds. Poultices have been used for headaches. The essential oil of Bee Balm has been said to have therapeutic effects in the treatment of seborrhea. Studies of its antibacterial, anti-mycotic, and anti-inflammatory activities showed that it inhibits the growth of micro-organisms and is superior to hydrocortisone in combination with vitamin B6 for its anti-inflammatory activity. Pliny says that eating the leaves, and applying some of them to the face, have been found, by experience, to cure the leprosy, and, when used with vinegar, to help dandruff. All the above ground parts are edible and used as a pot herb. It is also used as a flavoring in cooked foods. The flowers and young leaves make an attractive and edible garnish in salads. The fresh or dried leaves are brewed into a refreshing, aromatic herbal tea. The red variety of Bee Balm is commonly known as Oswego Tea. It was used by colonists in place of English Tea after the Boston Tea Party. Bee Balm also adds a slightly minty or pineapple flavor to wine, juleps, and tonic waters. The edible flowers are even used to decorate cakes and other sweets. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Bee Balm is a perennial herb native to Eastern North America. It flowers in pink, purple, red, and white. It flowers with large heads of about 20-50 flowers at the top of the branching stem, which is about 3 feet high. In strong sun, the stems are purple. The leaflets are a pale-green color, occur in opposite pairs, are toothed, lance-shaped, and occur in opposite pairs. Fine, dense hairs cover much of the stem and leaves. The roots are short, slender, and creeping. Bee Balm prefers full sun (but will also bloom in part shade), and dry, well-draining neutral or alkaline soil. It easily grows in garden soil, and even grows well in heavy clay. It can survive in hardiness zones 3-9, and is a perennial down to zone 4. It likes to grow in disturbed areas like old fields, thickets, clearings, and open woodland paths, as well as in ditches and by the sides of rivers. The flowers bloom mid-summer through fall. Bee Balm starts best from plants that spread greatly, but will also grow well from seed. Plant at least 18-24 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation and avoid the powdery mildew (a fungal disease) that it is prone to if planted too thickly and without sufficient air circulation. Reduce watering if you see mildew begin to appear. But water thoroughly at the time of planting. If growing from seed, surface sow and do not cover with soil. Just press the seeds in and keep moist with bottom watering. The plant should germinate in about 3 weeks at cool room temperatures. Sow in mid-February to have transplants ready to flower in spring, or sow in the fall. Fertilize sparingly in the spring by sprinkling fish emulsion, kelp, aged manure, or compost. Excess fertilizer may lead to growth of mildew. Do not allow it to dry out completely. Add mulch to preserve moisture and control weeds. Divide the roots every 2-4 years to make more plants or to renew the original plant. In the spring, make small divisions of the newer roots of established plants and replant. Harvest leaves and flowers while in bloom. Deadhead faded blooms to encourage the plant to re-bloom in late summer. Deadheading the main stem allows the side shoots to develop and bloom. Cut these as well when they reach the desired size. Strip the leaves from the stalks to dry for tea, dry in small bundles in paper bags, in a well-ventilated area for at least 2 days. Hang flowered stalks upside down to dry. After the first fall frost, leave seed heads for the birds or cut stems back to about 2 inches above the soil.     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
