Marshmallow leaf has a long history of use as a culinary herb and the root of the plant is the original source of the confection of the same name. The long, thin roots have been used for food during times of scarcity for centuries. Marshmallow is also commonly used in teas and to produce lotions, creams and ointments. Pliny the Elder once wrote, “Whosoever shall take a spoonful of the Mallows shall that day be free from all diseases that may come to him.” The Greek physicias Hippocrates and Dioscorides recommended marshmallow poultices to take the sting out of insect bites and skin abrasions. Dioscorides prescribed an infusion of vinegar and marshmallow seeds for toothache. Because the entire plant, especially the leaves and roots, contains a high degree of mucilage, the herb is often used to make syrup and throat lozenges. Mallow tea is well known in alternative medicine for its use as a demulcent to soothe throat inflammations and laryngitis, and as an expectorant for coughs and bronchitis. It is also used for dysentery, lung ailments and urinary ailments. The tea is also taken for gastritis and enteritis or used as an enema for intestinal inflammations, and has been used as a laxative for young children. Marshmallow has been used externally to wash wounds and sores or made into an emollient salve or poultice to soothe skin inflammations. A decoction of the roots has been used for fevers and to reduce blood pressure. The seeds are also chewed as a nervine, stomachic and to sweeten the breath. The seeds are also said to be aphrodisiac. Marshmallow has been used as a demulcent and diuretic in diseases involving mucous membrane irritation and catarrh such as acute dysentery, diarrhea, kidney, bladder, and respiratory inflammation. Marshmallow has also been applied topically in the form of poultice for painful and inflammatory tumors, swellings, bruises, burns, scalds, or infections. As a form of soluble fiber, marshmallow has gentle bulking laxative effects and draws out toxins from the bowels. This is a popular voodoo practice. Marshmallow is a protective and cleansing herb. Burning marshmallow cleanses an area, indoors or out. Or steep the leaves and flowers in oil and use the oil to anoint yourself when you feel the need to be protected from demons or spells cast against you. If you are journeying in the astral plane and wish some extra protection, apply this oil before you enter your trance. Marshmallow is also used for love and fertility spells and is suitable for handfastings or to enhance sex magic. The dried flowers are implemented into cords during handfasting rituals. To fight infertility and impotence, gather marshmallow seeds under the light of the full moon and use them in sachets. Amulets of the leaf and/or root are also used to encourage fertility. Marshmallow flowers can also be added to ritual baths, especially for those to encourage and invoke fertility and lust. If your lover has left home, or likes to wander, a vase of marshmallow flowers in your window will guide him/her home. Also associated with death and rebirth, marshmallow can be used in departing rituals and those to honor the dead or planted on or near gravesites. The ancient Celts believed that placing the disk-shaped fruit over a dead holy man’s eyes would keep evil spirits from entering the body as it attempts to get into heaven. The water left over from cooking any part of the plant especially the root, can be used as an egg-white substitute in making meringues, it is concentrated by boiling until it has a similar consistency to egg white. Marshmallow root is used to make natural shampoos and conditioners for dry or damaged hair.   Taste & Smell:  Pleasant with a hint of sweetness. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Althaea officinalis is native to Europe, also found in Asia, Africa, and has naturalized in North America. It has stems which stand erect at 3-4 feet with only a few lateral branches, that die down in the fall. Marshmallow are perennial and annual, and can be found growing wild along road sides, in salt marshes, ditches, and waste places in full sun. The thick, roundish, ovate-cordate shaped leaves have short stalks that join to the plant’s stem. They are 2-3 inches in length and about 1¼ inch wide and are irregularly toothed at the margin. A dense covering of stellate hairs makes the leaves soft and velvety on both sides. Although the pale bluish flowers are shaped like those of the common mallow, they are smaller and often grow in panicles (loose, branching clusters). The flower’s stamens are united into a tube, the anthers are kidney-shaped and one-celled. Fruits are round and flat and look like a sliced round cheese, hence the name cheeses or cheese plant. Marshmallow has long thick roots that taper at the end. They are very tough and pliant. The roots are whitish yellow on the outside with a fibrous white interior. It can tolerate most soil types, including saline soils. Sow seeds in the spring in a moist location with full sun or partial shade. The marshmallow plant is self-fertilizing and will reseed on its own, however stratification can improve germination rates and time. Once large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Plants may also be divided or reproduced via root cuttings. Marshmallow leaves should be picked just as the plant begins to flower. The root has the highest mucilage content in the winter and should be harvested as late as possible in the season. Choose a dry day, and harvest from plants at least two years old. Marshmallow Root is often dried and powdered. Store dried marshmallow leaves and dried marshmallow root in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: May cause some stomach upset in some individuals.
