Various Native American peoples used the blossoms and pollen collected from the flowers to make skin and hair preparations. Women of the Cahuilla Indians used the pollen for a cosmetic and the whole plant as a sedative for babies. The Luiseno Indians chew the flowers with chewing gum, and several Native American tribes traditionally ate the leaves as greens, yet pregnant women of one tribe avoided even the scent of this poppy as poisonous. The seeds are still popular in cooking today and the leaf is made into teas and tinctures. California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a member of the poppy family of flowering plants found throughout the western U.S. It is particularly prolific in California, where the plant was designated the state flower in 1903 and subsequently celebrated each April 6th on California Poppy Day. The plant is also known as flame flower and copa de oro, which means “cup of gold.” Unlike many other state flowers, it is not illegal to harvest the plant, unless you were to pluck it from private property. In fact, the species is quite invasive and resistant to disease, although it has been displaced in certain areas by wild grasses. The orange flowers are familiar to people in the western US, but this plant’s blooms can also be purple, yellow, or cream. Another misconception about California poppy is that the plant contains opium when it does not. The morphine-like drug is obtained from a completely different genus and species of plant called the opium poppy. However, California poppy does contain certain alkaloids that lend the plant mild sedative qualities. California poppy does not contain opium, nor does it have the same addictive qualities as opium. However, the herb is used in herbal medicine as a milder remedy for many of the same conditions; it has anodyne (pain relieving) and tranquilizing properties. It is said that instead of causing the psychological problems known to opium poppies, it is mentally stabilizing. It is often used in the form of a tincture because the infusion is bitter. The tincture is made from the above ground parts, harvested during the flowering period. As a remedy, California poppy should not be used prior to driving or any other task that requires full attention until the user is familiar with its effects. This herb has hypnotic effects similar to those of opium poppy but is much milder and non-addictive. It will regulate sleeping patterns and aid with pains, neuralgias, migraines, stress, nervous bowel, depression, anxiety and hyperactivity. Historical Uses: mild sedative, pain relief, tranquilizing, mentally stabilizing, nervous system relaxant, hypnotic, anxiolytic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, bitter, diuretic, antispasmodic, regulate sleeping patterns, neuralgias, migraines, stress, nervous bowel, depression, anxiety, hyperactivity Mystical Attributes: Poppies have a long history of use in both magic and medicine and have been used for their ability to bring calm, ease pain, and induce sleep. They were thought to be included in witches’ flying ointments to counter some of the adverse effects of deadly nightshade (belladonna) and also to be an antidote for its poison. Mystical Intentions: fertility, abundance, sleep, love, dreams, relaxation, peace, imagination Taste & Smell: Has a warmly aromatic odor. The initial taste is slightly sweet and warm, then becomes bitter. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: California Poppy (Eschscholzia Californica) is native to the United States and Mexico. It is a perennial or annual of the Papaveraceae family, growing to 5–60 in (13–150 cm) tall, with alternately branching glaucous blue-green foliage. The leaves are ternately divided into round, lobed segments. The flowers are solitary on long stems, silky-textured, with four petals, each petal 2 to 6 cm (0.79 to 2.4 in) long and broad; flower color ranges from yellow to orange, with flowering from February to September. The petals close at night or in cold, windy weather and open again the following morning, although they may remain closed in cloudy weather. The fruit is a slender, dehiscent capsule 3 to 9 cm (1.2 to 3.5 in) long, which splits in two to release the numerous small black or dark brown seeds. California Poppy is easy to grow from seed as an annual. It thrives in dry, sandy, well-drained, poor soil, and will stand up well to heat. Does best in full sun, but will thrive with some moisture and part shade. Plant this annual in the fall if you have mild winters (Deep South or Pacific Northwest) and in the spring, at the same time as radishes, if you have cold winters. This plant does not transplant well and should be grown from seeds scattered outdoors in the spring when the soil becomes workable. Scatter the seeds where the plants are desired for summer bloom. Direct sow (plant in the soil where they are to grow rather than in pots) because they have a long taproot. This plant may seem like it is a perennial, coming back in the same place every year due to self-seeding. However, self-seeding may not produce plants identical to the initial planted variety. Germinates in 2-3 weeks at 60-65 F. Mix the seeds with sand and broadcast (throw) the seed/sand on the cultivated bed you’re going to use. Cover with 1/4″ of soil (or simply water with a medium spray–mud will cover most of seeds). You can also start these in pots, though, and in that case start them 2-3 weeks before the last frost in your area. Sow in peat pots, cover lightly, and bottom water (pour water in the tray rather than in the pot). Transplant outside to sunny place with poor soil to 6″ apart. Deadhead (pick off dead flowers) and don’t water too much or give much fertilizer. If summer nights are hot where you are, it will not get as many flowers. Harvest California Poppy leaves, stems and flowers during the growing season, use fresh or dried. Dry the leaves, stems and flowers and store as smaller cut pieces in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Toxicity: No known adverse effects in small amounts. High doses may cause nausea and a residual hangover effect. Contraindications: None known. Interactions: Caution with nervous system meds. May have addictive effects when combined with sedatives. Constituents: Isoquinoline alkaloids (californidine, eschscholtzine) Flavone glycosides (rutin) Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.
