No commercially processed woods are used. You can sift the ashes if a fine texture is needed. Wood ash has been used for thousands of years for numerous applications. Historically, wood ash was a precious asset. It has been used for food preservation, gardening, pottery, pest control (it can repel slugs and snails), and even cosmetics. When wood ash combines with water, it forms lye. Wood Ash Lye is a little less caustic than the commercial lye used in drain and oven cleaners. Mixed with small amounts of water, wood ash forms a mildly abrasive paste that can be used to buff tarnished metals, clean dirty glass, clean jewelry, and even remove adhesives. Wood ash is used as a soil amendment, as it contains calcium (which neutralizes acidity), potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and trace elements. It is also used to boost lawns and is added to compost. *CAUTION: Wood ash mixed with water creates a strong alkali that is capable of burning human skin.
