Samhain (pronounced “Sah-win”), also called “Día de los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead”, is the pagan New Year and marks a chance to reconnect with our ancestors and honor those who have died. This is the period when the veil between the earthly world and the spirit realm is thin, allowing the spirits of the dead to contact the living. In some cultures, it is disrespectful to mourn the dead. Instead, you should keep their spirit and memory alive. Samhain is observed on the sunset of October 31st to sunrise of November 1st. It marks the beginning of the Celtic New Year, the end of summer, the end of the harvest season, and the beginning of winter, the season of death that is part of the cycle of life and necessary to experience rebirth. It is also a time to reflect on what you need to release in order to transform. And to think about what your departed ancestors would want for you. In Catholicism, All Saints Day is November 1st, and they believe the souls of the deceased visit on November 2nd, known as All Souls Day. Samhain is a bright and colorful celebration, not at all dark or scary, but a celebration of life and dedication to the memories of those who have died. Make a warm cup of Samhain Tea. Find a quiet private space to reflect. Anoint then light your candles, then light your incense. Get comfortable and take three deep breaths. Ask the gods/goddesses to be with you and watch over you. SAMHAIN TEA INGREDIENTS Oolong ~ With a name that means “black dragon”, Oolong tea combines the robust flavors of black teas with the lighter tastes of green teas. Apple Pieces ~ Apples are arguably the most magical and symbolism-laden of fruits. In the Edda, an old Scandinavian Saga, Iduna kept apples that the Gods would eat to ensure their eternal youth. In Greek folklore, the Hesperides guard apple trees that will provide the same gift to those who eat of them. Although the Bible never actually says so, many people believe that the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was an apple. The Trojan war was started when the Goddess Eris threw an apple into the midst of a party of Goddesses, saying that it was for ‘the fairest’. Unicorns are believed to live beneath apple trees (as well as those of the ash). The sacred Isle of Avalon is also known as the Isle of Apples. The widespread availability and fertile abundance of apples associates them with life, longevity, youth, love, healing, harmony, fidelity, marriage, beauty, vanity, wisdom, and fertility. Folklore associates the apple with the afterlife, the soul, immortality, fairies, creativity, generosity, and the otherworld.
