The oil is native to New Zealand, where the indigenous Māori people have used it for centuries. It is rare, and thus can tend to be expensive. It has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-parasitic, anti-microbial, insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and spasmolytic activity. Some studies have shown that Manuka essential oil possesses a 30 times stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial than Tea Tree essential oil. Manuka oil has been used to help symptoms of skin conditions. It can help acne, dry and itchy skin, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, insect bites and stings, chafing, sunburn, minor scrapes and grazes and infections, and the appearance of scars, wrinkles and age lines. It is skin brightening and can help reduce the appearance of age sports and dark spots. It can also help relieve dry itchy scalp and help restore dry nails. When used in body and massage oils, manuka help prevent body odor as well as help relieve joint and muscular aches and pains. Manuka is one of the most powerful herbal anti-fungals you can find, and can help athlete’s foot and ringworm. Manuka has been used, and has been found in some studies to be effective, at helping certain parasitic infections like scabies, head lice, and dust mites. It has even been used to help inhibit plaque formations from herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Manuka oil has been shown to have strong effects against Staphylococcus and Listeria strains, making it a nice addition to herbal kitchen and bath cleaners when combined with water and vinegar. In a comprehensive study of the effects of 60 different essential oils reported by the National Institute of Health National Library of Medicine, Manuka oil (properly diluted in propylene glycol) was found to be the seventh most effective antibacterial against H. pylori. Manuka oil is known to calm red and inflamed areas, itching, scabs, and soothe irritation caused by pests. But it will grow in the United States in USDA hardiness zones 9 and 10. Manuka can be grown from seed by collecting seed pods from a flowering tree in late spring, early summer, or early spring. Strip the unopened seed pods from the branches and store them in a paper bag or on newspaper in a warm, dry place for a week or so until they open and release their seeds. Sift out the seeds and sprinkle them lightly over a firm, smooth bed of seed raising mix. Water well but don’t cover the seeds. They should germinate in one to four weeks. When seedlings are about 50mm tall, transfer them to a pot and add slow-release fertilizer. Once the seedlings are established, plant them directly into the ground, digging a hole that’s twice as deep and wide as the root ball. Manuka grows best in warm climates and does not do well in temperatures below 40°F. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, slightly acidic soil mixed with compost, sheep pellets and fertilizer. Mix well, backfill the hole, and water well. Water the plants regularly when young to keep the soil moist, and water deeply as it grows to encourage root development. It does not need regular fertilizer when planted outdoors, but slow-release fertilizer can be added to pots when seedlings are about 50mm tall. After the plant has finished flowering, it can be pruned to maintain its shape, encourage bushier growth, and promote more blooms. Do not cut back more than one-third of the plant at a time.
