While the plant produces clusters of deep purple flowers that add interest to the landscape, the roots of the plant yield a blue dye that was used by Native Americans and early colonists before it was replaced with “true” indigo (Indigofera tinctoria). The genus name for this plant, Baptisia, is adapted from the Greek bapto, which means to dye or dip. Wild indigo bark is also traditionally made into tinctures and infusions for topical use, as well as teas. Wild indigo is an herb to be considered wherever there is a focus of infection. It supports and stimulates the body’s own immune response to infection. It is especially useful in the treatment of infections and catarrh in the ear, nose and throat. It has been used for laryngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and catarrhal infections of the nose and sinus. Gargles and mouth washes of wild indigo have been used for infected mouth and throat conditions, canker sores, gum infections, and sore throats. Small pieces held in the mouth helps toothache. It has been used internally to help in the treatment of enlarged and inflamed lymph glands and also to reduce fevers. The root has been used to treat fevers, scarlet fever, typhoid, influenza, swine flu, malaria, and pharyngitis. It has also been used for upper respiratory infections, tonsilitis, pharyngitis, chest infections, and more. Externally, wild indigo as an ointment is said to help infected skin ulcers, sores, cuts, and wounds. A decoction of the root soothes sore or infected nipples and other skin conditions. Native Americans used wild indigo in poultices to treat snake bites. Canadian tribes used wild indigo to treat gonorrhea and kidney disease. Homeopathic tinctures have been used to treat gastrointestinal infections. Research has shown effectiveness of a combination of vitamin C, wild indigo extract, echinacea, and thuja for cold sores, leukopenia (low white blood cell count) in people having received chemotherapy for 6 months or less, sinusitis (when used for 20 days), and tonsillitis (when used for 2 weeks along with a specific antibiotic). Baptisia Tinctoria (Wild Indigo) is a herbaceous perennial plant in the Fabaceae family. This upright, smooth, shrubby perennial typically reaches heights of 2-3 feet. Its pea-like flowers are small and bright yellow to cream (growing up to 1/2″ long) and are produced in numerous, sparsely-flowered clusters (terminal racemes to 4-5″). The flower clusters appear on stems extending above a foliage mound of gray-green leaves. These clover-like leaves are stalkless, trifoliate and have leaflets up to 1 inch in length. Wild indigo blooms in late spring to early summer. Its flowers will give way to small inflated seed pods. When the seed pods ripen, they turn black and have some ornamental interest, and sound like a rattle when shaken. Wild indigo grows in dry meadows and open woodland environments in full sun. It prefers a deep, rich, well-drained neutral to slightly acid soil. Wild indigo grows freely in a loamy soil. Sow seed as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame. Stored seed should be pre-soaked for 24 hours in warm water and then sown in a cold frame in late winter or early spring. Transplant into individual pots once large enough to handle, plant outside the following spring. You can also take divisions in spring and plant directly into the garden. Harvest the roots in the fall, and dry cut root pieces for later use. Store dried wild indigo root pieces in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
